Courier Fraud

Courier Fraud: A Growing Threat to UK Residents

Courier fraud is a deceptive scheme targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, across the UK.

This crime has resulted in significant financial losses, with over £28.7 million stolen nationally in the past year alone.

How it works:

  1. Fraudsters pose as police officers or bank officials, contacting victims by phone.
  2. They claim there's a problem with the victim's bank account or that counterfeit money is circulating.
  3. Victims are persuaded to withdraw large sums of cash or hand over valuable items.
  4. A 'courier' is sent to collect the money or valuables from the victim's home.

Key facts:
• People in their 80s are most frequently targeted, accounting for 43% of victims.
• In Avon and Somerset alone, over £429,000 was lost to courier fraud between March 2023 and April 2024.
• Cases have been reported in various UK locations, including Bath, Bristol, and Taunton.

Protect yourself:
• Remember, police and banks will never ask you to withdraw money or hand over valuables.
• Never give out personal or financial information over the phone to unsolicited callers.
• Take time to think and consult trusted friends or family if you receive suspicious calls.
• Use call blocking devices on landlines to filter out scam calls.

If targeted:
• End the call immediately.
• Report the incident to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040) and your local police.
• Contact your bank if you've shared any financial information.
